An URGENT APPEAL from a past Kenya Leaper
filed in Announcements, Fundraising, Kenya, The Leap's chosen charity on Sep.20, 2010
For those of you who’ve never met me my name is Susie, I’m about to start a university course in London and I went on the July team Leap to Kenya.
I’m guessing you know that when you are out in a country like Kenya it’s quite common to take steps to sponsor a local child whether it’s buying them a uniform, schoolbooks or contributing to their fees. While I was out in Kenya trying to work out who to sponsor, I was approached by a 20 year old in Makongeni, near to Diani at our first camp, one of the local boys who had been so friendly and welcoming to our entire group. His name is Kombo and he has had a growth obstructing his eye for over seven years. Kombo lives with his grandparents, his mother was unable to look after him, couldn’t even afford the fee for a scan of the growth. Initially I thought the problem could be solved by offering them a small amount of money, 3000 Kenyan shillings.
Now however, I have been contacted by the family through a contact from camp Kenya to say that the operation will cost far more than originally expected. Something in the region of £1500, the growth is a tumour which will need to be operated on quickly.
I spoke to several people at The Leap and Camp Kenya, two of whom know Kombo and have vouched for his request being genuine. Please don’t feel any obligation but if you feel that you can make any contribution, even if it’s only a few pounds I would be incredibly grateful.
