Ever wondered what University admissions tutors actually think of gap years? Well, whilst both UCAS and AGR (Association of Graduate Recruiters) make clear statement in support of of constructive gap years, University admissions tutors are usually a little quiet on the subject.

The truth is that most admissions tutors are very keen on students taking gap years if they are used constructively and allow you to demonstrate/develop the soft skills (i.e. confidence, organisation, time keeping, team work etc) you will need to be a successful student. Voluntary work placements overseas with The Leap do just that. It is generally believed that University students who take a gap year prior to their first year are statistically more likely to complete their course and perform well at degree level as they bring a level of maturity, commitment and personal interest that is sometimes lacking in students who come straight to University from school. When all is said and done, the main concern of admissions tutors is choosing applicant who will not drop out and are going to be a reliable source of income (as well as brain power!) for the department over the next 3-7 years. If you’ve been away from education for a year, seen a bit of the world and till decided to take up a place on your chosen course then you’re more likely to stick at it. Simple as!

UCAS advises that if you are applying for University and planning to take a gap year you should include this in your personal statement. This will enhance your university application, making your personal statement stand out from the crowd and increase your chances of being noticed by the admissions tutor. UCAS says “explain why you are taking a gap year and what you plan to do. Demonstrate your enthusiasm and initiative, and highlight how the activity may relate to your course“.

And as you can see from the interview with our very own Alice Baines (above) she did just that and has never looked back!
