Kenya Update 3: October 2010
filed in Kenya on Oct.04, 2010
Just got back from the field and you will be pleased to hear things are running really well now. Have had long chats with all and they are very happy and all is organised and running smoothly.
The group is split into various projects with some carrying on with the nursery school construction while others have started to build a traditional house for very old lady (photos attached). She must be well over 80 and since her husband died, and sons have gone, there is no money at home. The house she lives in currently is almost falling down and she lives there with her daughter and six grandchildren. This elderly lady’s story is very interesting. She is actually originally from Mozambique and walked to Kenya almost fity years ago. She worked for many years as a househelp in Mombasa after which she came to the south coast to work on the sugar cane plantations and eventually settled in Makongeni. She has tatoos all over her face which is not done by the local tribes here. This group have committed to finishing this house before they leave which is great as they would see a full project from start to end.
Equally exciting is we have started a new feeding program at a catholic centre so every morning the group is taking turns to go and prepare porridge and give out to the children and play with them a little. We shall see how this goes and it will also act a stepping stone into the centre to see what other needs in terms of bigger projects there are. We built them an energy efficient stove which they will start using in a few days to prepare the porridge. The stoves are fantastic as they reduce fuel wood consumption by about 70% (we have already built almost 200 of them around Makongeni as one of our other community outreach projects.
Afternoons are dedicated to teaching at the school at at the new ICT centre run by Rafiki Kenia.
They have two more working weeks at Makongeni and will leave for our new camp at Imani Women’s Group on the 15th October.
They will be back for their last week in Makongeni on the 5th November.
Wonderful group as always…
