Moritz in the Massai Mara- A Solo Leaper’s Tales
filed in Africa, Solo on Jul.07, 2010
For the next 3 months, Moritz Schmidt who is 28 and from Canada, will be taking a Solo Leap volunteering as a camp manager on Safari in Kenya. Here’s a peek at his diary:
Greetings – all is more than well here. I think Greg caught my subtle hints about wanting to see some more wildlife, so I’ve been able to go on a couple of real live game drives into the Mara, which were incredible…exactly what I was expecting, but yet still impossible to prepare for. I’ve posted some photos on my facebook page, and have never had so many friends and family comment!
The camp is a little slow at the moment, so a few staff have taken holidays, which has given me a chance to get fully involved in more of the camps operations, which is definitely what I’m wanting to learn more about. The last few days have also been full of working on marketing and bookings with Greg, trying to work some magic. The language skills are slowly improving as well…I can almost communicate (very basically) in swahili, and have learned a few Maasai words as well.
Finally, my wife (we got married just before leaving) Catherine is doing very well in Oloolaaimutia, so I’d have to say the two of us have settled in very well (so far).
Thanks for checking in. I’ll be in touch. Also, Greg and I ran into Rob Flowers from East Africa canvas, who mentioned that he knew you Guy (MD of The Leap).
Cheers,
Moritz
