South Africa Update 3: Conservation Project Work
filed in South Africa on Apr.20, 2010
Week 3 for the Leapers in South Africa and all is going well! Last week’s projects within the game reserve went well and the team are all looking a lot more buff and tanned for their efforts! The conservation work consisted of routine road maintainence, as there has been some serious rain. While one group was working on the roads the others were building a survival boma. A boma is an enclosed area about 5 meters in radius which we will sleep out in the bush during our basic survival course.
The week ended off with Siswati and Afrikaans lessons (two local languages spoken in the area). Yesterday we played our first football match against one of the local teams. Unfortunately we lost 4 -5 on penalties, but hey we’re back next weekend to challenge them and win back the title!
This coming week is community week and we plan to teach and play sport with one of the local schools and while half the group is teaching and playing sport the other group will be building another room onto the orphanage! This is where the group have chosen to focus the bulk of their donation money.
The horse leap program also seems to be gaining momentum and the girls are enjoying themselves! Here’s a few pics of everyone in action to whet your appetite…
Regards Luke (South Africa project Leader)
