These are exciting times indeed- with the arrival of horses for the first time at Kwa Madwala Game Reserve in South Africa.

All in good time for our first ever intrepid Horse Safari Team who arrive next week! Jo, Katherine, Lucy, Sophie and Cecilia will be spending the next 10 weeks caring for these gorgeous animals, learning to track wildlife on horseback and riding out on safari. In the afternoons they’ll be joining our other South Africa Leaper working on Safari and helping local township projects such as orphanage building and teaching. Happy days!

These horses are what are commonly known as “Boereperde”, a word derived from the Dutch/Afrikaans word “Boer” meaning “farmer” and “Perd” meaning horse – directly translated farmers horse. They are now officially recognized as a breed having evolved from an inbreeding of various undefined horses in South Africa. The result is a strong, lively, yet even tempered, hardy and sickness resistant horse who can happily cope with living in the African bush. They were sourced locally in near by Waterfall Boven about two hours from Kwa Madwala, but are well acclimatized and familiar with game as they come from an area where they roam amongst Zebra and other antelope species. They are well prepared having just had various inoculations including horse sickness and de-worming etc etc prior to arrival.
