Massive thanks to the Leap’s Summer ’09 and January Borneo Teams for all their graft at the Sun Bear Conservation project…we’ve just heard that the Sun Bear Centre they all worked so hard to help get up and running is finally finished, and ready for bears! Tuesday marked history of BSBCC (Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre) as they started to move the 12 bears in the old bear house to the state of the art new bear house 1.

Here’s a photo diary from the past few days to show you what they’ve been up to. Click the images for the full story!

The procedure starts with Om, one of the three males bear in the centre. Om is a 5 year old bear who was confiscated by the Borneo Wildlife Department from private owner some 5 years ago. Over the past 5 years he has grown enormously (in size and character!) and BSBCC have been taking good care of him.

The next bear on the move was Suria. A bit more than one year old, she is the youngest female bear in the centre, weighing 25 kg. The medical team decided to give her some treatment whilst under sedation.

She had a wound on her body and Dr. Cecilia is treating her.

Suria’s hind paw. It's amazing how human their feet are!

Like everyone who worked really hard to get this centre ready, Om too was tired and snuggled straight up to sleep in his new basket like a baby!

Thanks again to all our past Borneo Leapers that have helped to make this happen- you are stars and should all be very proud of what you have done. Now the Sun Bear is completed future Borneo Leap Teams will be working at different projects in the same area- however every Leaper who goes to Borneo will have the chance to visit BSBCC and admire your handiwork (and Om’s lovely basket!).
