Flipping Kayaks in Venezuela
filed in Venezuela on Apr.05, 2011
Hola from Playa Colorada in Venezuela!
The April Leapers are off to a great start. The team spent the weekend at the beach and as a result almost all are a bit sunburnt, we went in the boat to visit La Piscina and Playa Melissa (islands with beaches in the Mochima National Park) and talked about past groups and all the work they have done. If there are any past Venezuela Leapers reading this you should know that both beaches are much cleaner and I believe that due to your work there National Parks authority is finally holding up its end of the deal and clearing the trash off the beaches on a regular basis!! It is very inspiring to see results and the group is looking forward to getting to work there as well.
Today we did the tour of Playa Colorada village, meeting the locals and introducing the volunteers to the community’s kids. After that the team went to the beach for a kayak class and learned how to flip a kayak and remain calm (essential skills for kayaking out to the islands for work!), and had our first project meeting. The group has four hours of Spanish class today to get them prepared to talk to locals about what we are doing here and how they can help. Tomorrow we will head out in kayaks to La Piscina to further document damage to the reef and surrounding areas.
So far so good!
Thanks,
Kaitlyn (The Leap project Leader in Venezuela)
