They're here!

Hola all!

All is well with Leap Venezuela team. They are a fantastic bunch, full of enthusiasm and are very helpful in general.

Last week we had 10 hrs of Spanish which all seem to have enjoyed and benefited from. We took them on a walk around Playa to meet the neighbours and see how people rely live here in Playa, and also to find out how they make their living (mostly from local tourism, selling food on the beach and some fishing also).

La Piscina Beach

The Volunteer project for the first two weeks is going well so far.. they started to clean a little island called La Piscina.. mostly the rubbish in the water, beer bottles, cans etc, that visiting day trippers throw over board. They use a kayak, and others in the water dive down to get the rubbish and throw it into the kayak. This will make snorkeling in that area a bit more pleasant!! They will continue clean up operations this week and will also make some signs to put up and a rubbish bin to install on the island, and they will give a little talk to the local kids in our community centre later this week about correct waste disposal.

Generally ALL GOOD apart from having had a bit too much sun (Aloe Vera is being liberally applied!), I am sure they will send good reports and I will send another update in a few weeks time!

In other news, we are very excited to announce that project coordinator Brendan became a Dad this weekend to a  3.5kg boy called Caelan Uriel. Mother and baby are well and Brendan is planning to spend a few days with them in Caracas whilst myself, Sophie and Govida look after the Leap team here in Playa. Congratulations Brendan!!

All the best…

Chris
