Intern Phase

Teaching Overview
We are excited to introduce our new teaching intern programme in Ecuador which provides 6 week high quality teaching placements, in schools, in the capital of Quito; with the option to add 3 weeks of volunteering; before going wild on an adventure week at the end!

This full and contrasting programme aims to challenge both your mind and your muscles whilst satisfying your itchy feet as you’ll have the opportunity to travel the length and breadth of this fantastic country. From the sophisticated, metropolis of Quito to the charming rural lifestyle in the Andes to the famous Galapagos - you can see it all.

Teaching Internship - first 6 weeks.
We work within 2 schools based in Quito, who take 2 interns per departure.  In both schools you’ll be needed both inside and outside the classroom.

Inepe School:
Inepe School is community run and found in the South of Quito, about a 40 mins from your central accommodation.  It’s a mixed school with about 800 students ranging from 2 – 18 years old. The school includes a pre-school day care centre and has pioneered an organic garden, which aims to provide the bulk of the school meals.

Conocoto Schools:
Conocoto is a small suburb of Quito that has two large public primary schools, one for girls, one for boys, with  approximately 900 students in each, ages 5-12 years old. Both schools are in need of English speaking volunteers to assist the local teachers and help teach computer skills and sport.

Typical Day
Monday – Friday: A typical school day is from 0730 –1300, which includes time for 4 x 45 min lessons, lesson planning and breaks!  The afternoons are usually spent assisting with sport and other extra curricular activities/clubs.

Skills and Experience

Communication/Spanish Lessons
Intensive Spanish lessons will be given every afternoon to all leap interns for the first two weeks, Monday to Thursday.

Teacher/Teaching Assistance
The amount of responsibility you’ll be given will depend on your skills, experience and confidence. However it is important to note to that you don’t need any specific experience beyond an enthusiasm and passion for working with younger children! In some schools you can start off as an assistant teacher where you can help another ‘main’ teacher in the classroom and progress as you grow in confidence.  Alternatively you can be brave and choose to teach on your own from the start.

TEFL – not required but recommended.

Teaching Guides - we'll provide you with a Teaching Guide, which has been written exclusively for The Leap by professional teachers and past volunteers with specialist interest in teaching.

Subject Choice
We will do our best to ensure you teach subjects inside and outside the classroom that appeal to you. We will ask you to tell us which subjects you feel most comfortable teaching and will pass this on to the school. We do however ask that you remain flexible at all times and willing to help in all areas, depending on the needs of the school.
