Gap Year Advice
Choosing a gap year programme is a significant decision that requires careful consideration of your goals, interests, and practical factors. Here at The Leap we are one of the leading gap year providers in the UK - we have our own gap year programmes as well as offering general gap year advice and know-how. We are your gap year go to.
Here's a definitive list of questions you need to be asking when deciding which gap year programme is right for you. Ask these questions and you will feel prepared, confident and happy with your decision before embarking on your ultimate adventure. Knowledge is power ...
Do I want to gain work experience, learn a new skill, travel, volunteer, or focus on personal development? Not to brag but our gap year programmes are carefully curated to weave into the programme some CV boosting bonus points such as team building, resilience, language learning and personal awareness.
Am I interested in adventure travel, cultural immersion, language learning, community service, or academic preparation? Stalk their Instagram to get more of a feel for what life looks like on the ground. We are quite proud of our Instagram here if you wish to see more.
What are the specific activities, schedule, and structure of the programme? Really drill down and find the information, ask the questions, call the organisation, speak to someone who has done the programme. Knowledge is power after all, and there is no point you doing a programme that teaches Spanish if you are already fluent - or scuba diving if you hate water!
Now this is very important. You need to be asking what age the leaders are, how many are on duty at any one time. If you only remember one thing - ask where the leaders are throughout the programme. It's all well and good having a robust team of leaders however if they are not actually sleeping at the same base as you and in actual fact reside 5 miles away then they are no good to you if you have an emergency. All our team leaders move around with our Leapers and sleep in the same accommodation so are on hand throughout to deliver a well-managed and seamless programme.
Is it a few days, weeks, months? This may seem an obvious question but it is one not to be overlooked. Ensure you are travelling for the right time frame that works for you - you do not want to be leaving a programme half way through because you didn't read the small print.
Crucial question. Most gap year companies will take volunteers from 18-30 years old. We are not one of them - we only take volunteers aged 18-21 because we want everyone to be in the same chapter of life and it helps enable better team bonding. Life at 18 is very different to life at 30, we know this and want to create the best possible gap year experience for you. Ready to find out what sets us apart? Another vital question when selecting your gap year programme- it's all well and good knowing the total price as per the website but you should be asking about additional expenses, how many dinners are included for example. What extras are you expected to pay for out there? How much to additional activities cost?
You need to be asking how much you should expect to pay for flights and insurance, it will depend on time of year and availability so ensure you speak to the organisation to get a rough estimate of these prices to know if this is the right programme for you.
How does the organisation handle emergencies or medical situations? It is important to know this so that you are informed and feel comfortable with your choice of gap year programme.
Ask about the support services available. Is there 24/7 support,
counseling services, or local contacts? Understanding how you will be
supported throughout the programme is essential for your peace of mind.
Get details about the local culture and language. How safe and
accessible is the area? Will you be based in one location, or will you
be moving around? Also, check what the phone reception is like. These
logistical details are important for ensuring a smooth and enjoyable
experience.
Will I be staying with a host family, in a dorm, or in shared housing? A key question to ask in your gap year programme research - all offer completely different vibes.
How will this programme help me achieve my personal and professional goals? Gap years are a time to have fun but also to be productive and accelerate your life skills and potential career. Want to learn a language, get PADI certified, improve your social skills or explore life outside of your comfort zone - take a look at our gap year programmes.
Does the programme have connections with organizations or companies that can provide internships or jobs?
Can I read reviews or speak to alumni to get an honest perspective?
Does it have a good reputation in the gap year community? Is it a member of the Year Out Group or Gap Year Association for example. (Bonus point - we are members of both).
Are there options to customize the experience, such as choosing specific projects or locations? Can you choose the duration?
Are there specific eligibility criteria, deadlines, and required documentation?
Are there pre-departure orientations, language classes, or cultural training?
What is their approach to responsible tourism or volunteering? What are their values like as a company?
By asking these questions, you can gather the necessary information to choose a gap year programme that aligns with your goals, ensures your safety and well-being, and provides a meaningful and enriching experience.
