Colombia + Costa Rica Itinerary

community development + tayrona challenge + historic cities

This two-country gap year volunteering adventure across Colombia and Costa Rica is your chance to dive into authentic culture, meaningful community projects, and wildly contrasting landscapes. From Colombia’s mountain towns and Caribbean coastline to Costa Rica’s cloud forests and untamed Pacific beaches, this journey is designed to challenge you, inspire you, and leave a lasting impact.

Day 1

Santa Marta, Colombia

Arrival

Starting in Colombia, your adventure begins in the colourful colonial city of Santa Marta, the perfect gateway to the Caribbean coast and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Your first couple of nights will be spent at the lively and centrally located Republica Hostel, a place buzzing with travellers, rooftop views, and that unmistakable sense of anticipation that comes with the start of something big.

These first days are all about settling in, grounding yourself, and getting to know your group before the journey unfolds. You’ll have time to unpack, wander the cobbled streets, grab your first taste of Colombian arepas, and soak up the warm, tropical air. Then, as the sun dips, you’ll head out on an evening tour that throws you straight into the city’s rhythm.

Day 2

Minca

Waterfalls, Jungles and Mountain Air

You’ll kick-start your adventure with a day up in the mountains, the perfect way to shake off the jet lag and dive straight into Colombia’s wild side. First stop: Minca - a peaceful village tucked in the Sierra Nevada, surrounded by waterfalls, jungle, and mountain air.

You’ll head out to cool off in natural swimming holes at either Pozo Azul or Marinka Falls - both stunning and seriously refreshing. Afterwards, you’ll visit a local coffee and cacao finca to sample some of Colombia’s most iconic flavours, freshly brewed, rich, and straight from the source. Feeling energetic?

There’s an optional short hike to the Los Pinos viewpoint for those panoramic shots. Then it’s back to Santa Marta for a relaxed evening to do your thing - beach, wander, or feet up - before Tayrona kicks in tomorrow.

Tayrona National Park

A Journey Through Time & Nature

Your Colombian adventure kicks into gear with a 2-night, 3-day hike through Tayrona National Park - a journey through ever-changing jungle trails, hidden beaches, and remote, wild camping spots.

You’ll start early, following the coastal route from Cañaveral to Arrecifes, Piscina, and Cabo San Juan, hiking through lush rainforest and stopping for swims in crystal-clear coves along the way. Your first night will be spent camping at Arrecifes beach, where you’ll fall asleep to the sound of the waves and wake to the rustle of jungle life all around. The next day, you’ll continue deeper into the park, with the option to challenge yourself on a tougher trail up to Pueblito, an ancient indigenous site nestled in the hills.

You’ll then spend your second night at the iconic Cabo San Juan del Guia - hammocks, tents, sea breeze and stars.

On your final morning, wake early for a sunrise over the Caribbean, and enjoy some well-earned downtime on the beach before beginning your transfer to Palomino.

Palomino

Adventures in Palomino + Community Project

After your time immersed in Tayrona’s wild jungle and remote beaches, you’ll emerge into the laid-back, bohemian beach town of Palomino, where the Caribbean Sea meets the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. This stunning stretch of coast will be your base for the next few days, and it’s the perfect place to catch your breath and settle into Colombia’s coastal rhythm.

You’ll kick off with some well-earned downtime - think golden beaches, surfy cafés, and a chance to properly relax. For those wanting to explore, you can trek out to the Quebrada Valencia Waterfall or hike up to the Mundo Nuevo viewpoint for panoramic views over jungle and sea.  But Palomino isn’t just about the beach.  Soon, you’ll head into the mountains for a rare opportunity: a guided visit to the Kogi tribe, one of Colombia’s most spiritually rich indigenous communities. You’ll learn about their traditions, their deep-rooted connection to the land, and their powerful vision for sustainable living - it’s a meaningful encounter that stays with you.

From there, the adventure continues with a tubing expedition to get back to base, floating gently down the Palomino River, framed by towering mountains and dense forest. It’s peaceful, otherworldly, and the perfect way to take in the region’s natural beauty.

You’ll also spend time at one of the local schools, getting stuck into a light renovation project - think painting, gardening, or sprucing up the classroom - and of course, there’ll be plenty of time to connect with the students through games, and shared stories. It’s a simple but powerful way to give back and experience daily life in this remote community.

Here, you’ll roll up your sleeves to support vital work, planting mangroves, helping with reef clean-ups, and learning how tourism and marine conservation can go hand-in-hand.It’s hands-on, meaningful, and wildly beautiful. Sun, salt, and purpose all in one place.
