Gap Year Programme

Cambodia Good to know

community development + jungle exploration + historic sites

Project Background

Our Cambodia programme is in partnership with See Asia Differently, which Peter & Eva Jones, began 8 years ago. “We wanted to create something a little different, something that matched our passion for the region. By spending time with our clients and offering a range of options, we help them avoid the well-worn path to the tourist traps and instead create bespoke experiences that capture the essence of their destination while matching their personal requirements”.

They are passionate about encompassing sustainable responsible travel with lifting the lid on these exquisite destinations. They have all the need-to-know contacts and have curated a unique adventure for us.

Cambodia Essentials

Language icon

Communication

English is widely spoken in Cambodia, making it easy to communicate during your trip.

Additionally, our guides are fluent in English and will be on hand to assist with translations whenever needed, ensuring smooth and clear communication throughout your adventure.

Wi-Fi & Mobile icon

Phones + Wi-Fi

Staying connected in Cambodia is easy.

You'll be able to pick up a local SIM card on day one with the help of our team, and there’s reliable Wi-Fi in most accommodations, cafés, and project sites — so whether it’s checking in at home or sharing your adventures, you’re covered.

Weather icon

Weather & Travel Times

Cambodia has two distinct seasons: wet and dry.

We travel during the dry season, which runs from November to April—expect warm, sunny days that are perfect for exploring and making the most of your adventure.

Visa & Passport icon

Visas & Entry Requirements

If you hold a UK or US passport, you can obtain a T Visa for Cambodia on arrival or apply online before your trip. The visa costs $36 and allows a stay of up to 30 days. Apply through the official eVisa website: https://www.evisa.gov.kh/.

Passport Requirements
Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your entry date into Cambodia and have at least two blank pages.

Proof of Exit
You’ll need to provide proof of onward travel, such as a return ticket or evidence of departure by air or land, upon entry into Cambodia.

Flights icon

Flights

You’ll fly into Siem Reap and out of Phnom Penh, with exact dates depending on flight availability. Please refrain from booking any flights independently - wait for our admin email, which will include your recommended flight itinerary.

We coordinate flights through Trailfinders, the UK’s most trusted travel brand, ensuring your booking is ATOL-protected for peace of mind (ATOL number T1458).

Insurance icon

Insurance

For UK Residents: We recommend Campbell Irvine Ltd who have designed a policy specifically with our projects in mind. We suggest you purchase your travel insurance at the earliest opportunity, so you are covered for any insurable reasons in the unlikely event you must cancel having committed to your itinerary or paid for flights.

USA Residents: We recommend Inext who can combine with your exiting medical cover. Most Leapers buy the Platinum Policy.

Vaccinations icon

Vaccinations

The following list is a general guide, please consult your GP or a travel health clinic for personalised medical advice based on your health history and travel plans. Vaccinations commonly recommended for travel to this region may include:

Hepatitis A
Japanese Encephalitis
(recommended depending on season and itinerary)
Polio (often included in childhood vaccines—check if a booster is needed)
Tetanus (ensure your booster is up to date)
Typhoid

Money icon

Money

Bring a mix of US dollars and a debit/credit card. Cash is widely used, and ATMs are easy to find, though cards aren't accepted everywhere. Cambodia uses both US Dollars and Cambodian Riel—you can pay with either, but expect change in Riel. It’s simple to manage and you'll get the hang of it quickly.

Budget around $150 per week, depending on your activities, and our team will help you find great value along the way.

What to Pack?

Clothes

  • When packing, keep in mind that laundry services are widely available throughout Cambodia (except during the jungle phase) and cost approximately $5 per kilo. This means you can pack light.

While you’re free to wear casual clothes like strappy tops during your downtime, it’s important to dress respectfully when visiting temples or holy sites such as Angkor Wat - covering your shoulders and knees is a must.
