Imagine waking up, stepping outside and spotting a sloth in the trees. Later that day, you could be swimming alongside sea turtles, watching monkeys swing through the canopy or hearing the unmistakable call of a toucan.
No, this isn’t a David Attenborough documentary.
It’s your gap year in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica may be relatively small, but it packs an incredible amount of biodiversity into its borders. Rainforests, cloud forests, mangroves, beaches, volcanoes and tropical dry forests all create habitats for an extraordinary variety of wildlife.
And the best bit? You don’t have to be sitting in a zoo or wildlife park to see it.
Here, animals are part of everyday life.
You might be walking to your accommodation and notice a brightly coloured bird in the trees. You could hear howler monkeys calling from the forest canopy. A sleepy sloth might be hanging out above you. And if you head towards the coast, there’s a whole other world to discover beneath the waves.
For animal lovers, it’s pretty special.

Costa Rica is home to an almost ridiculous list of incredible creatures.
There are sloths, of course. Two-toed, three-toed, sleepy, ridiculously cute sloths.
There are monkeys, including howler monkeys, spider monkeys, squirrel monkeys and white-faced capuchins.
There are toucans and scarlet macaws, with colours that look almost too bright to be real.
And then there are sea turtles, which make the country's coastline just as exciting as its rainforests.
Depending on where your adventures take you, you could also encounter crocodiles, iguanas, frogs, coatis, anteaters, bats and countless other species.
And that's before you've even started looking at the insects.
Yes, Costa Rica has a lot of insects.
But that's all part of the adventure.
One of the best things about experiencing Costa Rica on a gap year is that wildlife becomes part of the whole experience.
You're not simply arriving somewhere, taking a photo and leaving again.
Through conservation projects, you'll learn more about the environments these animals depend on and the challenges facing them. You'll see first-hand why protecting habitats and biodiversity matters – and you'll have the chance to play a small part in that.
It's an opportunity to turn a love of animals into something much more meaningful.
And you don't need to be studying zoology, conservation or environmental science to get involved.
You just need to care.
Of course, your Costa Rica gap year isn't going to consist entirely of staring into trees hoping a sloth appears.
Although, let's be honest, you'll probably do quite a lot of that.
There are waterfalls to discover, beaches to explore, forests to hike through and new places to experience. You'll have opportunities for adventure, relaxation, cultural experiences and plenty of time to explore with your new friends.
Which means your gap year can be whatever you want it to be.
One day you could be getting your hands dirty on a conservation project.
The next, you could be hiking through the rainforest.
Then you might find yourself swimming in crystal-clear water, relaxing on a tropical beach or heading off on an adventure with the friends you've made along the way.
It's a pretty good way to spend a year.
If your ideal gap year involves wildlife, adventure, conservation, tropical landscapes and meeting people from around the world, we'd say Costa Rica deserves a very serious look.
Because some gap years give you stories to tell.
